Facing drug-related charges can be terrifying. One arrest can lead to incarceration or a criminal record that may follow you throughout your life. Not only are there ways that you can fight drug-related charges, but there are options available for those who struggle with substance use disorder.

Substance use disorder is a condition that can change the function and structure of your mind. The courts recognize addiction as a medical condition that requires treatment. Drug treatment court may help reduce your charges and allow you to better your life.

What is drug treatment court?

Drug treatment court involves a team of community members and court professionals who ensure that offenders receive intensive treatment for alcohol or drug-related substance use disorders. The point of a DTC program is to reduce drug dependencies and recidivism and to provide resources to people who need help. Drug treatment courts can also limit the number of people incarcerated for drug-related offenses.

How does drug treatment work?

Evidence shows that jail may not effectively treat substance use disorder. Addiction is a chronic disease that does not respond as well to incarceration as treatment. A person’s recovery treatment requires medical professionals to determine the patient’s specific needs and to create suitable programs. Recovery plans could include hospitalization for detox, outpatient or inpatient therapy, self-help groups, outpatient medication and much more.

Drug treatment isolates the patient from a lifestyle that may encourage or trigger drug use. In treatment, patients are given the tools necessary to cope with addiction and to return to society as productive members.
